Industries served

Built around what you're cooling

Storage temperature, humidity band and pull-down speed change completely by product. We design to the produce, not to a template.

Citrus

−0.6 °C to 8 °C depending on cultivar and market

Export citrus needs cold sterilisation protocols held precisely — a half-degree drift can fail a shipment, and peak intake arrives faster than most packhouses can pre-cool.

Avocado

4 °C to 7 °C (cultivar dependent)

Avocados bruise easily and are highly sensitive to chilling injury — too cold and you get grey pulp, too warm and ripening runs away in transit.

Table Grapes

−0.5 °C to 0 °C

Grapes must reach core temperature within hours of picking, in the hottest months of the year, with SO₂ sheets and berry moisture loss both in play.

Macadamia

10 °C to 15 °C for nut-in-shell, 0–5 °C for kernel

Macadamia value is destroyed by moisture and rancidity, not by heat alone — humidity control matters as much as temperature.

Mango

10 °C to 13 °C

Mangoes suffer chilling injury below 10 °C but arrive from the field at 35 °C, so pre-cooling must be fast yet strictly floor-limited.

Apples & Pears

−0.5 °C to 2 °C

Long-term storage means controlled atmosphere integrity — a leaking room loses both gas and months of shelf life.

Potatoes

4 °C to 10 °C depending on end use

Processing potatoes sugar up if stored too cold, and bulk piles generate their own heat and condensation.

Red Meat & Poultry

0 °C to 2 °C chilled, −18 °C to −25 °C frozen

Abattoir and processing cold sides face constant washdown, heavy door traffic and strict hygiene inspection.

Dairy

1 °C to 4 °C

Dairy is unforgiving on temperature excursions and needs redundancy — a failed compressor is a written-off tank.

Fresh Vegetables

0 °C to 4 °C for most lines, 7–10 °C for chilling-sensitive crops

Mixed vegetable lines arrive warm, wet and in small batches, and one shared room has to hold high humidity without freezing leaf tips or cross-tainting.

Wine Grapes

8 °C to 15 °C cellar, 0–4 °C cold stabilisation

Harvest cooling demand spikes for six weeks a year — must chilling, tank jacket cooling and cold stabilisation all compete for the same plant at 35 °C ambient.

Raisins & Dried Fruit

5 °C to 10 °C

Dried fruit spoils through moisture pick-up, sugaring and insect activity rather than heat — a normal high-humidity cold room actively damages it.

Dates

0 °C to 4 °C chilled, −18 °C long-term

Northern Cape date packers work in 40 °C-plus ambient and need both low-humidity chilled holding and freezer capacity for carry-over stock.

Poultry

0 °C to 2 °C chilled, −18 °C to −25 °C frozen

Daily kill volumes must move from carcass temperature to core chilled within hours, in a washdown environment under constant hygiene inspection.

Berries

0 °C to 1 °C

Blueberries and raspberries lose shelf life by the hour if field heat is not pulled within 90 minutes of picking, and they bruise under aggressive airflow.

Cut Flowers

1 °C to 4 °C (tropicals 8–12 °C)

Flowers are ethylene-sensitive, dehydrate quickly and are usually stored alongside produce that emits exactly the gas that kills them.

Pharmaceutical & Vaccines

2 °C to 8 °C, −20 °C and −70 °C options

Regulated storage has no tolerance for excursions — every minute out of band must be logged, alarmed and explainable to an auditor.

How a project runs

Assess → design → fabricate → install → commission → maintain

  1. 01. Site assessment

We measure the site, product volumes and peak-season ambient, then confirm the real heat load.

  2. 02. Design & quote

Layout drawings, plant selection and a line-item quote with no hidden scope.

  3. 03. Fabrication

Panels, racks and control panels prepared before we mobilise, minimising site time.

  4. 04. Installation

Envelope, plant, piping and electrical installed by our own teams, phased around production.

  5. 05. Commissioning

Pull-down tests, calibration, alarm testing and operator handover with as-built docs.

  6. 06. Maintenance

Scheduled servicing and 24/7 emergency cover keep the plant inside spec for its full life.

FAQ

Common questions

Where does Reyds operate?

We are based at 386 Eeufees Street, Pretoria North, and install and service projects nationally across all nine provinces, as well as into neighbouring SADC countries.

Do you build the whole packhouse or only the refrigeration?

Both. We take turnkey contracts covering structure, insulated envelope, refrigeration plant, electrical and controls — or supply only the cold room or plant scope if you already have a builder.

How fast can you respond to a breakdown?

Our emergency line is answered 24/7. Gauteng callouts are usually same-day, and maintenance contract clients get priority dispatch nationally.

Can you work around our harvest season?

Yes — installation windows are planned around your packing calendar, and phased work keeps existing chambers running while new capacity is built.
